Summary

A gripping, openhearted novel about family, reconciliation, and bringing closure to the secrets of the past。

Early into the tempestuous decade of her thirties, Rae Langdon struggles to work through a grief she never anticipated。 With her father, Connor, she tends to their Ohio farm, a forty-acre spread that itself has enjoyed better days。 As memories sweep through her, some too precious to bear, Rae gives shelter from a brutal winter to a teenager named Quinn Galecki。

Quinn has been thrown out by his parents, a couple too troubled to help steer the misunderstood boy through his own losses。 Now Quinn has found a temporary home with the Langdons—and an unexpected kinship, because Rae, Quinn, and Connor share a past and understand one another’s pain。 But its depths—and all its revelations and secrets—have yet to come to light。 To finally move forward, Rae must confront them and also fight for Quinn, whose parents have other plans in mind for their son。

With forgiveness, love, and the spring thaw, there might be hope for a new season—a second chance Rae believed in her heart was gone forever。

A Passing StormMy first novel by this author and I am totally in awe。 A new favorite and I am so glad that Amazon had this in Prime reading。Everything to love in a story well written from the storyline, characters and excellent editing!

Having been born and lived most of my life in NE Ohio, I loved the venue of the book。 I did live through the real White Hurricane and will never forget its' devastation。 The story incorporates this event but places it in current time rather than in 1978。 The characters are well developed and their feelings and experiences help this event to come alive。 This is a good story of family - blood relatives as well as those we accept as family。 Having been born and lived most of my life in NE Ohio, I loved the venue of the book。 I did live through the real White Hurricane and will never forget its' devastation。 The story incorporates this event but places it in current time rather than in 1978。 The characters are well developed and their feelings and experiences help this event to come alive。 This is a good story of family - blood relatives as well as those we accept as family。 。。。more

Full of surprises and wonderful charactersNormal I don't like books that make me feel like I picked them up in the middle of the story。 I felt that way with this one but something kept me going and I'm glad I did! The reviews on this book were excellent, but I certainly didn't find this a five star book。 I found empathy for the characters, Rae, Conner, and Quinn losses, but I thought the story line seemed somewhat predictable。 Additionally, I found Quinn's parents to be somewhat flat and stereotypical of the town's alcoholics。 I thought the plot line of Rae's mother, and her artistic talent, to be more interesting and almost wished she had been a live character in the book。 An average read, but I think th The reviews on this book were excellent, but I certainly didn't find this a five star book。 I found empathy for the characters, Rae, Conner, and Quinn losses, but I thought the story line seemed somewhat predictable。 Additionally, I found Quinn's parents to be somewhat flat and stereotypical of the town's alcoholics。 I thought the plot line of Rae's mother, and her artistic talent, to be more interesting and almost wished she had been a live character in the book。 An average read, but I think this book had the potential to be more。 。。。more

I'm a stickler for writing technique。 If I'm distracted by the technical aspects of a novel, reading it becomes a chore and it eventually hits the slush pile。That said, this was a 'meh' book for me。 I chose it as an Amazon First Reads based on the blurb and first few sentences, and I did finish it, but for the most part it slogged along and read like a first- or second-year creative writing submission, as unfortunately most of the AFR books do。It had a lot of dialogue。 I mean a LOT of dialogue, I'm a stickler for writing technique。 If I'm distracted by the technical aspects of a novel, reading it becomes a chore and it eventually hits the slush pile。That said, this was a 'meh' book for me。 I chose it as an Amazon First Reads based on the blurb and first few sentences, and I did finish it, but for the most part it slogged along and read like a first- or second-year creative writing submission, as unfortunately most of the AFR books do。It had a lot of dialogue。 I mean a LOT of dialogue, most of which was exposition。 Rule of thumb in writing a decent novel: show me, don't tell me。 I hate exposition that drags on for paragraphs and pages as an author attempts to explain by prose or dialogue the story, history, settings, characters, etc。 I want to visualize what's going on and why。 I want to see the characters, feel what they're experiencing, and understand their motivations。 It's a tall order, which is why so many don't get it right。This book had so much explanatory banter I was ready to hit delete on my Kindle more than once。 I wasn't invested in the characters and couldn't get immersed in the plot。 While the overall storyline was worthwhile, and Nolfi did give it her best shot, I wouldn't read anything else by this author。 。。。more

HeartacheThis story touches on so much heartache, from loss of loved ones, to broken friendships, to abuse and violence。 But the tale is one of healing, of the many ways people grieve and cope, of the power of friendships and compassion。 It delves into self-recrimination and blame。 And through all this finds hope and an affirmation of life。

Christine Nolfi is one of my favorite authors, and she didn’t disappoint with her latest。 Its based on a true climate event that her family experienced in Ohio in the 70’s。 It was a terrifying time and changed many lives, as it did Rae, the featured character in this story。Rae lost her mother during the White Hurricane, a horrendous snow storm event in Ohio。 It left her father devastated and in a state, which left teen age Rae to try and keep life together for them both。Another tragedy occurs th Christine Nolfi is one of my favorite authors, and she didn’t disappoint with her latest。 Its based on a true climate event that her family experienced in Ohio in the 70’s。 It was a terrifying time and changed many lives, as it did Rae, the featured character in this story。Rae lost her mother during the White Hurricane, a horrendous snow storm event in Ohio。 It left her father devastated and in a state, which left teen age Rae to try and keep life together for them both。Another tragedy occurs that further devastates their lives, and Rae struggles to keep going。 She ends up helping a lonely, neglected local teen, and this has a huge impact on her own life and relationships, as well as putting her in a dangerous situation。This novel has it all, love, relationships, losses, and renewal, just as there is with every passing storm。 The calm returns and life goes on。 My thanks to NetGalley, Lake Union Publishing for the ARC。 It is a wonderful story and definitely worthy of 5 stars。 。。。more

This book was just okay for me。 I was vested in Rae's story though some parts of it were a bit predictable。 The author also did a good job of showing how the secrets of the past influence the present and how everyone handles their grief in their own ways。 This book was just okay for me。 I was vested in Rae's story though some parts of it were a bit predictable。 The author also did a good job of showing how the secrets of the past influence the present and how everyone handles their grief in their own ways。 。。。more

Interesting storyLovely and despicable and just human characters make for a well rounded view of this sad and happy story。 The mystery of what happened to Lark and who was her father was a bit cat and mouse but made things interesting。 No big surprises but a good read。

And as the mystery unfolds, the questions multiply。 The loss of a mother, the loss of a daughter, what really happened that night and who is to blame, the unexpected tenderness between Rae, her father, Connor, and ah, no。。。I won't divulge。 Please read this book and enjoy its twists and turns。 I have found a new author and I'm currently reading another of her books。 Enjoy! I always know I’ll have a good story when reading a book by this author。 A little bit different from her usual writing, but no less enjoyable。 In every lifetime there are passing storms…。some are quick, forgettable and others change our lives。 Rae has had her share of these storms, one in particular, The White Hurricane, changed her family’s life and set her on a different path。 Rae has had a a few tough years; pain, heartache and grief, which has turned her a tad hard and bitter。 Those closest I always know I’ll have a good story when reading a book by this author。 A little bit different from her usual writing, but no less enjoyable。 In every lifetime there are passing storms…。some are quick, forgettable and others change our lives。 Rae has had her share of these storms, one in particular, The White Hurricane, changed her family’s life and set her on a different path。 Rae has had a a few tough years; pain, heartache and grief, which has turned her a tad hard and bitter。 Those closest to her know what is under this hard exterior, a giving women who has locked her heart away。 Resilience, hope and strength are front and foremost in this book。 Thanks to Ms。 Nolfi, Lake Union Publishing for this ARC。 Opinion is mine alone。 。。。more

A Modern Love StoryLove, anger, rage, jealously, and compassion are a few of the emotions brought out in this book。 A tragedy of losing a child, a secret kept for 14 years, the women of a small town, and teen love all make this book a page turner。

Heartwarming but not sentimental or or silly。 I enjoyed this book。 It's the story of people who were always meant to be together finding each other。 The people in the story were mostly realistic and well drawn。 Perhaps they were a bit too 'good' or 'bad' to be really real but for the most part were believable。 The story itself was interesting and believable。 A young mother looses her daughter thru a terrible accident and has a hard time working thru her grief。 A young boy is brutalized by his al Heartwarming but not sentimental or or silly。 I enjoyed this book。 It's the story of people who were always meant to be together finding each other。 The people in the story were mostly realistic and well drawn。 Perhaps they were a bit too 'good' or 'bad' to be really real but for the most part were believable。 The story itself was interesting and believable。 A young mother looses her daughter thru a terrible accident and has a hard time working thru her grief。 A young boy is brutalized by his alcoholic parents and only needs a loving hand to set him on a good path。 Perhaps they can help each other。 。。。more
